THE FLOOD OF DEATH

Kudos to Tom Kriemer for this very interesting article.

Not every network attack is a deliberate act by a brazen hacker. Some are just the result of incompetent or thoughtless programming. Such was the case with a massive denial of service attack that hit the University of Wisconsin last spring. The event is described in a fascinating report recently released by Dave Plonka, one of the researchers involved in diagnosing the cause of the attack.

Dave's report is a blow-by-blow diary of the process of tracking and blocking the abusive traffic, leading to the ultimate discovery of the root cause: flawed firmware in millions of Netgear routers.
